Composition Each 60 mL dose contains sodium 2.4 g, potassium 1.8 g, chloride 3.8 g, phosphate 1.4 g, magnesium 176 mg, sulfate 695 mg; glucose 15.6 g.
Actions Concentrated solution of body salts and glucose that can be given by oral syringe over the back of the tongue or diluted with water as a drink. Helps promote rapid rehydration during the cooling down and recovery periods following exercise.
Indications Fluid and electrolyte depletion due to strenuous exercise and sweat loss during training, racing, competition and transport in all performance horses.
Precautions Always ensure a separate supply of clean, fresh drinking water is available after administration.
Withholding Periods Meat Nil.
Dosage and Administration Recharge concentrate solution can be administered by oral syringe over the back of the tongue, with immediate access to clean, fresh drinking water provided as required. Alternatively, Recharge can be diluted with clean, fresh drinking water as directed. As a drink, apple flavoured Recharge is accepted by most horses, but some may prefer a more diluted form initially.
Oral syringe over tongue. Horses, 450 to 500 kg. Light work (up to 30 minutes duration): 40 mL. Moderate work (30 to 60 minutes duration): 60 mL. Heavy work (racing, jumping, polocrosse, polo, stock work): 80 mL.
Endurance/eventing, heavy sweat loss/dehydration: 80 mL.
 Ponies < 350 kg. Half the above volumes.
Made-up drink in water. Horses, 450 to 500 kg. Light work (up to 30 minutes duration): 40 mL in 2 L water as first drink. Moderate work (30 to 60 minutes duration): 60 mL in 3 L water as first drink. Heavy work (racing, jumping, dressage, polocrosse, polo, stock work): 80 mL in 4 L water as first drink.
Endurance/eventing, heavy sweat loss/dehydration: 80 mL in 4 L water as first drink.
 Ponies < 350 kg. Half the above volumes.
Special dose rates. Severely dehydrated horses. 6 to 8 L of made-up solution (40 mL Recharge/L of water) may be administered by stomach tube as required under the supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Endurance exercise. 60 to 80 mL can be administered by oral syringe over the tongue, during a ride or at check points, provided water is available or offered immediately. Travelling horses. Hot weather or long distances: 40 to 60 mL over the tongue, with water provided, 30 to 60 minutes before travelling; repeat every 2 to 3 hours during travelling, and again on arrival as required.
