Manufacturer:  Novartis Animal Health Australasia Pty Limited
Registered Name Milbemax Tablets for Small Dogs and Puppies; Milbemax Tablets for Dogs
Composition Milbemax Tablets for Small Dogs and Puppies. Milbemycin oxime 2.5 mg, praziquantel 25 mg. Milbemax Tablets for Dogs. Milbemycin oxime 12.5 mg, praziquantel 125 mg.
Actions Milbemycin oxime is believed to interfere with the transmission of nerve messages in roundworms, hookworms and heartworm by binding to receptor sites on the glutamate gated chloride channels of the cell membrane, leading to hyperpolarisation and elimination of nerve signal transmission.
Praziquantel causes influx of calcium at receptors on the body surface of tapeworms. This leads to membrane depolarisation and almost instantaneous contraction of the musculature (tetany), rapid vacuolisation of the syncytial tegument, and subsequent tegumental disintegration (blebbing), resulting in easier expulsion from the gastrointestinal tract or death of the tapeworm.
Indications Treatment and control of roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina); treatment and control of whipworm (Trichuris vulpis); treatment and control of hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense); treatment and control of tapeworm infections (Dipylidium caninum, Taenia sp. and Echinococcus granulosus); and prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs and puppies over 2 weeks of age.
